tv heroes

TV Heroes talks about our relationship to the media and to TV itself, as a presence in our homes and lives. It rethinks the need for heroes as role models of society and investigates if the role of a hero needs to be questioned, especially in light of the ‘end of the meta-narrative’ proposed by Lyotard in The Postmodern Condition. In this process we would like to work and experiment with questions such as:  What’s a hero or a TV hero? What is our position towards TV? Do we love it, reject or just don’t care? Are we watching TV or TV is watching us? Are we addicted to TV? What propels us to watch TV? And, rather, why are we increasingly the subject of its observation? The idea for TV Heroes started through discussing and exploring our childhood memories and fantasies about our own personal heroes from television. This brought us to a much wider and open discussion connected to the world in which we are living, dominated as it is by television and surveillance.
The project TV Heroes began in 2010 and has already produced some experimental results. Our practice is already being developed as we explore the concept of   TV Heroes under different umbrellas and through different lenses. In this regard we are, rather than undergoing one process to develop a finished performance work, undergoing several in order to dissect the topic and discover form through content. It started with a durational participatory installation for one audience member at a time; TV Heroes 1 was presented in July 2010 at Act Art 8, in London.  TV Heroes 2 took place in November 2010, in Brixton, where Inprocess collective presented a live art durational performance where we watched television over 15 hours and recorded our responses each hour in ‘diary room’ format – adopting some of the language of reality television and sharing it with visitors to the space who could watch with us and look at the responses. Inprocess collective developed a 20 minute dance work on the themes of TV Heroes in November 2010 in residency at CAPA, Faro, Portugal.  After successful residency in Faro,
Inprocess Collective was invited to a residency in Liberdade Provisoria, Lisbon, to develop  TV Heroes to a full theatre performance with its
premiere on the 22nd and 23rd April 2011.
